Baseball Set for Midweek Game at Michigan


KALAMAZOO, Mich. –  In midweek action the Western Michigan baseball team travels to Ann Arbor on Wednesday, March 21 for a match-up with Big Ten powerhouse Michigan at 4:00 p.m.

Scouting the Broncos
Western Michigan heads into midweek action coming off its first home series of the season against Butler dropping two of three. Over the weekend against the Bulldogs, WMU registered seven runs on 17 hits with a .296 on-base percentage. As a pitching staff against Butler, the Broncos recorded 30 strikeouts.  

Off to a Fast Start
Of the 75 runs that WMU has scored this season, 33 have come in the first three innings. In the first inning WMU has outscored its opponents, 12-6.  

On the Reisinger
Out of the bullpen, redshirt senior Andrew Reisinger leads the MAC with four victories and has the second lowest ERA in the conference at 1.64. Opponents against Reisinger this season are hitting just .215.

MAC Rankings
Western Michigan ranks first in the MAC with a .981 fielding percentage and 20th in the NCAA. The Broncos rank fifth in batting average (.261) and third in ERA (4.29).

Sacrifice Value
As a team, WMU ranks seventh in the NCAA with 19 sacrifice bunts. Senior Beau Filkins ranks 14th in the nation in sacrifice bunts per game at 0.31.

Closing It Out
Redshirt senior Jimmy Townsend-Chase has amassed four saves this season which ranks second in the MAC. Against Butler on Saturday, Townsend-Chase hit the mound with no outs and runners on first and second in the top of the ninth before striking out the next three batters.

Striking Opponents Out
The Bronco pitching staff has recorded back-to-back double digit strikeout games, earning 13 on Saturday and 10 on Sunday against Butler. Overall this season, WMU has six games with double digit strikeouts.

Last Time Out vs. Michigan
WMU and Michigan squared off on the diamond in 2017 with the Broncos falling to the Wolverines in Ann Arbor, 6-4. The Broncos jumped out to an early 3-0 lead before Michigan scored six unanswered runs to claim the victory. WMU's last victory over Michigan came on March 27, 2013.

Scouting Michigan
Michigan heads into Wednesday's contest with an overall record if 7-11 and 3-1 inside Ray Fisher Stadium. Prior to take on the Broncos, Michigan squares off with in-state foe Oakland on Tuesday, March 20.

Last weekend the Wolverines swept MAC foe Bowling Green at home outscoring the Falcons, 23-17 in the three-game series. Michigan is led by Jonathan Engelmann who leads the team in batting average (.290) and hits (20). As a team the Wolverines are hitting .237 and have an ERA of 4.49.  

A year ago, Michigan went 42-17 en route to an NCAA Tournament appearance. The Wolverines fell to Florida Gulf Coast and North Carolina in the NCAA Regionals and ended the season ranked No. 21 in the USA Today Baseball Coaches Poll.
