TOLEDO, Ohio – The No. 45-ranked Western Michigan men's tennis team begin Mid-American Conference season with a dominate 6-1 victory, on the road, over Toledo on Friday afternoon at the Shadow Valley Tennis Center. The Broncos snap their two-match losing streak with the win and improve to 12-4 overall.Â

The Broncos got things started early, clinching the doubles point at No. 2 and No. 3. Western Michigan doubles duo of
Eric Olivarez and
Nick Schnobel continue to lead the Brown & Gold this season after a convincing 6-3 double-clinching win over Toledo's Carranza / Olmedo at No. 3. The two together are now 13-6 overall this season and 7-3 this spring. The pair of
Maik Steiner and
Lenhard Haupt picked up the win at No. 2 to improve to 3-3 overall.
It was all WMU in singles, claiming the first three matches to clinch the match followed by winning the next three.
Matej Svjetlicic won his sixth match in a row, defeating Reid Teatsorth 6-1, 6-1 to put the Broncos up 2-0 and
Jannik Opitz made that 3-0 with a win at the three spot. Haupt served as the match clincher, defeating Danilo Vukotic at No. 4 6-2, 6-2 to hand the Broncos the win in the MAC opener and snap their two-match losing streak. Later in the match, Olivarez earned a win at the five and No. 113
Maik Steiner earned a win at No. 1, taking down Luka Vitosevic 6-2, 6-3.
Western Michigan remains in Toledo for the weekend, taking on defending MAC champions Buffalo tomorrow, March 17 at 1 p.m. for a neutral matchup. The match will most likely be played indoors at the Shadow Valley Tennis Courts due to weather conditions with the first serve set for 1 p.m.
