Scouting the Broncos
Western Michigan heads to the Sunshine State with an overall record of 2-4 after going 2-1 with victories over conference foe Miami and preseason Ivy League favorite Yale last weekend at the Campbell Invitational. The Bronco offense came to life down in Buies Creek, recording a .359 slugging percentage along with three homes runs and 11 RBIs.
Campbell Invitational Recap
The Broncos ended the Campbell Invitational last weekend with a 2-1 record after defeating Miami and Yale. In Friday's contest against Miami, WMU trailed by one in the bottom of the ninth before freshman
Sean O'Keefe blasted his first career home run to tie the game. With two outs in the bottom of the tenth, Grys hit a walk-off home run over the center field wall for the 2-1 victory. For photos:

On Sunday, WMU got a masterful performance from senior LHP
Jacob Piechota who went six innings, allowing no runs on four hits en route to a 6-0 victory over Yale. The Broncos collected a season-high 14 hits in the victory. For photos:

Piechota named MAC Co-Pitcher of the Week
On Tuesday, senior LHP
Jacob Piechota was named Mid-American Conference Co-Pitcher of the Week after earning a 6-0 victory over Yale. Piechota went six innings, allowing no runs on four hits while tying his career high with six strikeouts.
Grys Powering the Offense
Junior
Nate Grys has powered the Bronco offense early on this season, leading the team with a .364 batting average and .591 slugging percentage. Grys leads the team with six RBIs while his lone home run came in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the tenth to beat MAC foe, Miami.
Sharing the Field with the Tigers
For the seventh straight year, the Broncos will head to Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland, Fla. To take on the Top Prospects in the Detroit Tigers Organization. Notable participants from the Tigers organization include Ben Verlander, Javier Betancourt and Brennan Boesch.
Top of the Field Once Again
Through the first two weekends of action, WMU leads the MAC with a .987 fieldling percentage.
Streaking
Junior
Connor Smith currently is riding a five-game hit streak while fellow junior
Jesse Forestell has reached base safely in six straight games.
No Free Bases
Through six games this season the WMU pitching staff has not allowed many free bases. The Broncos have allowed just 17 walks this season, which ranks as the third lowest in the MAC.
Broncos Picked to Finish Sixth in Preseason Poll
Western Michigan was picked to finish sixth in the Mid-American Conference with 47 votes. Kent State is the league favorite with 98 votes and eight first-place votes.
Home Sweet Home
WMU will have 23 home games this season inside Robert J. Bobb Stadium at Hyames Field. The Broncos will play host to two Big Ten opponents in mid-week action in Michigan State and Northwestern. The Brown & Gold plays its first home series, March 16-18 against Butler.
Scouting Saint Bonaventure
WMU will begin its Florida trip with a three-game series against Saint Bonaventure, March 2-4. The Bonnies are 2-2 on the season and as a team are batting .221 and have a team ERA of 5.82. Last season SBU finished third in the Atlantic 10 Conference. The Bonnies are led by infielder Tyler Kelder who is leading the way with a .375 batting average.
Scouting Villanova
Villanova out of the Big East Conference is 3-3 this season, sweeping Norfolk State to open up the 2018 campaign. The Wildcats returns seven starters in the field and have a team batting average of .265.
Scouting Georgetown
WMU will play two games against Georgetown with a day off in between as the Hoyas head down to Florida with an overall record of 0-6. The Hoyas return 22 letterwinners from last year's squad, let by infielder Ryan Weisenberg who was named All-Big East Second Team last season.
Scouting Saint Joseph
Saint Joseph has an overall record of 1-3 on the season with the Hawks recording a team batting average of .248. Returning for the Hawks is the trio of Dominic Cuoci, Matt Maul and Charlie Concannon who all received All-Big East honors last season.
Scouting Florida International
In the final game in Florida, the Broncos will take on Florida International who currently has an overall record of 3-3. The Panthers on the mound are led by Nick MacDonald and Tyler Myrick who were named among the Top 10 2019 MLB Draft Prospects in Conference USA. At the plate, freshman Logan Allen was named Preseason C-USA Freshman of the Year by D1Baseball.com.
