Broncos Fall to #12 Tennessee and SDSU on Day Two at Kajikawa

Box Score TEMPE, Ariz.- Western Michigan dropped a 6-2 decision to No. 12 ranked Tennessee and lost 5-0 to San Diego State on day two of play at the Kajikawa Classic.

Sophomore Mackenzie Swinehart went 3-for-7 with an RBI over the two games. Six different Broncos accounted for WMU's six hits in game one against Tennessee. Sophomore Kaylen Glenfield hit a solo home run against the Vols for the Broncos' first long ball of the season. It was Glenfield's second career home run. Swinehart drove in WMU's second run.

Tennessee took an early 4-0 lead in the first inning off a pair of home runs. Glenfield launched her home run to left field to cut the deficit to 4-1 in the top of the third. The Vols got a run back in the bottom half of the inning following two throwing errors by the Broncos. WMU freshman Sophia Ehlers led off the fifth with a pinch-hit double and scored on an RBI single to the right center gap by Swinehart to bring the score to 5-2. Tennessee closed out the game with a final run in the bottom of the sixth.

Junior Anissa Sanchez took the loss in the circle, allowing five runs (four earned) and six hits while striking out one over 3.1 innings. Senior Holly VanTilburg threw the final 2.2 innings, giving up one run on two hits and struck out one. VanTilburg worked out of a one-out bases loaded jam in the fourth with a strikeout and a pop out to second base.

WMU was out-hit 10-4 in game two against San Diego State. The Aztecs scored two runs in the fourth inning on a solo home run by Molly Sturdivant and an RBI single. SDSU tacked on two more runs in the fifth on a two-run home run by Sturdivant and added a final run in the seventh.

Freshman Sydney Stefanick made her collegiate debut in the pitcher's circle in game two. She went four innings, allowing two runs, six hits and struck out four. Junior Jordan Kurth closed out the game and struck out six over three innings. She was touched for three runs on four hits. Over the last two days, Kurth has totaled 16 strikeouts over 10 innings pitched with a 2.70 ERA.

Jenna Faultersack doubled against the Aztecs, Swinehart, Brooke Wyman and Marlee Wilson each had a single.

Western Michigan returns tomorrow for day three at the Kajikawa, taking on Purdue at 4:30 ET and Seattle at 9:30 ET. WMU defeated No. 19 ranked BYU on Thursday in Arizona, 2-1.
