LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. – The Western Michigan golf team kicked off its Spring season on Monday at the Mid-American Match Play Challenge, defeating Fort Wayne and Akron to advance to the semifinals against Kent State on Tuesday at Lakewood Ranch Country Club.
The fifth-seeded Broncos started off the day with a 3-2 win over the Mastodons. Megan Watkins, Jasmine Chee and Julia Champion all picked up the wins. Watkins defeated Fort Wayne's Abbie Carlson 1UP. Chee defeated Jenna Kurosky 4&3, while Champion finished off Madison Chesnutt 8&6.
We had two great team wins today," said head coach Elise Swartout-Mosher. "Each of our players fought hard until the very end of their matches. It's nice to be in a competitive mode again and we are looking forward to more great golf tomorrow."
In the quarterfinals, the Broncos also defeated the Zips 3-2. Once again it was Watkins, Chee and Champions earning the wins. Watkins defeated Abbie Pearce 3&2, while Chee defeated Pader Her 3&2 to improve to 4-0 in her collegiate career in match play. Champion finished it off for the Broncos by defeating Jacinta Pikunas 1UP.
Western Michigan begins play at 7:50 a.m. on Tuesday against the Golden Flashes. Depending on the outcome the Broncos will also battle either Florida Gulf Coast or Northern Illinois in the finals or the match for third place.
