KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan golf team finally ends its winter break as it travels to Lakewood Ranch, Fla., and the Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club for the 2018 Mid-American Match Play Challenge on Monday and Tuesday.

WMU is the fifth seed in the tournament hosted by Bowling Green and will open the first round against Fort Wayne on Monday morning. If the Broncos advanced they will take on Akron on Monday afternoon. The course is set at par 72 and measures in at 6,068 yards for the tournament.

"We are excited to be in Florida for the first tournament of our spring season," said head coach Elise Swartout-Mosher. "I know that we are well prepared and eager to compete. Match play is always fun and a good way to restart the season. We talked a lot about patience, strategy and presence during practice to be in a great state of mind going into each match. We are looking forward to a great week."

Last season the Broncos opened up the tournament falling to Oakland, 3-2, but rebounded by beating Ohio 3-1. Western Michigan also went on to beat Northern Illinois, 2-1, and take fifth overall. Individually, Jasmine Chee shined at the tournament and went 3-0.

After the MAC Match Play Challenge, the Broncos have a few weeks off before heading to their home away from home, the Rio Verde Country Club in Rio Verde, Ariz., to host the annual Rio Verde Invitational on Feb. 23-25.
