Box Score CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.- The Western Michigan softball team defeated UT Martin 8-2 and Alabama State 6-0 Saturday at the Chattanooga Frost Classic. The Broncos have now won three games in a row and will conclude this weekend at the Frost Classic against Southeast Missouri State on Sunday at 10 a.m.
Freshmen
Logan Carter and
Samantha Coffel each hit their first collegiate home runs on Saturday. Carter hit a solo shot to center field in the second inning in game one against UT Martin. Coffel went deep with a three-run home run in the third in game two against Alabama State. Fellow freshmanÂ
Kaylen Glenfield also had a solo home run in the second inning against UT Martin for her second long ball of the season.
The Broncos gave up two runs in the first inning against UT Martin to begin the day and then held their opponents scoreless over the next 13 innings to close out the afternoon. Senior
Holly VanTilburg (1-0) picked up the win in game one, pitching a complete game, allowing five hits and two runs. Senior
Anissa Sanchez (2-2) got the win in game two, throwing a complete game shutout. She allowed just five hits as well and struck out one.
Over the two games sophomore
Mackenzie Swinehart batted 4-for-8 with three runs scored. Coffel also had a pair of singles and an RBI in game one to finish with three hits and four RBIs on the day. Senior
Marlee Wilson doubled and drove in a run in each game. Glenfield and senior
Aspen Williams also each had doubles.
Western Michigan improved its overall record to 5-5 with the two wins.
