Men's Tennis Sets Eyes on Two-Match Weekend

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Riding a four-match win streak and fresh off its second victory over a Big Ten opponent this season, the Western Michigan men's tennis team is back in action with a pair of matches this weekend. The Broncos host Colonial Athletics Association foe William & Mary on Saturday, Feb. 17 inside West Hills at 11 a.m. before heading to Ann Arbor on Sunday, Feb. 18 to face Michigan at the Varsity Tennis Center, beginning at 4 p.m.

The Broncos are coming off a 5-2 win over Michigan State, in East Lansing, on Friday, Feb. 9, picking up their fourth straight win as they improve to 7-1 on the season. The Tribe comes in at 5-1 overall, highlighted by an upset victory over No. 25-ranked South Carolina (4-3) on Friday, Feb. 9. The Wolverines have faced four nationally ranked opponents this season, owning a 3-2 record with wins over No. 20 South Carolina, No. 23 California and Harvard.

No. 96-ranked senior Maik Steiner has been the No. 1 player all spring for WMU and is riding a three-match win streak, coming in at 18-6 overall and 5-2 this spring and was just recently tabbed Mid-American Conference Singles Player of the Week. Sophomore Jannik Opitz is second on the team in wins at 16-7 while junior Matej Svjetlicic leads the Brown & Gold in dual play with an undefeated record of 8-0 and is also 9-1 in his last 10 matches.

In doubles, the duo of Eric Olivarez/Nick Schnobel lead the team in wins with a 10-4 overall record and are 4-1 at No. 2 this spring. Billy Heckman and Opitz were the only two to pick up a doubles victory last time out at Michigan State as they are 2-1 together this spring.

Western Michigan has another home/away weekend next Friday, Feb. 23 and Sunday, Feb. 25 as the Broncos travel to Valparaiso on Friday for a 3 p.m. start before returning home on Sunday, hosting Dayton (11 a.m.) and Ferris State (5 p.m.) at West Hills. Admission to all home tennis matches is free.
