TEMPE, Ariz.
- The Western Michigan softball team concluded play in Arizona at the Kajikawa Classic this weekend. The Broncos split games on Saturday, defeating Purdue 15-7 before falling to Seattle 11-8 in 10 innings in the nightcap. WMU dropped a 21-5 decision to No. 24 ranked Oklahoma State on Sunday. WMU went 2-4 over six games at the Kajikawa, also defeating No. 19 BYU Thursday.

Western Michigan's win over Purdue was its first over a Big Ten opponent since knocking off Michigan State, 4-3, in 2015. The Broncos had five home runs in the game and set season highs with 15 runs, 14 RBIs and 12 hits.

Brooke Wyman had three hits, two home runs - including a grand slam and seven RBIs. Aspen Williams had a pair of solo home runs and Marlee Wilson also had a solo shot. Erin Barg smacked a three-run double finished 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored. Anissa Sanchez picked up the win, throwing the final 3.2 innings.

Western Michigan and Seattle battled for four hours in a game that did not finish until 12:30 a.m. The Broncos held a 7-3 lead headed into the seventh inning before the Redhawks rallied back to tie the game. WMU missed an opportunity to pull out the win in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases with one out, but failed to push a run across. Seattle scored the go ahead run in the top of the 10th and added insurance runs with a two-run home run. WMU had three errors in the game.

Wilson doubled, going 2-for-4 and drove in fours runs. Freshman Samantha Coffel had a double, a triple and two RBIs. Sanchez took the loss, allowing five runs (two earned) over 3.2 innings.

The Broncos had a short turn around after leaving the sports complex in the wee hours of the morning and had to return at 8 a.m. for a game against Oklahoma State at 9 a.m. Sunday. The Cowgirls jumped ahead early with four runs off of two home runs in the top of the first. OSU blew open the game with eight runs in the third. WMU got on the board with a run off an error in the fourth. Oklahoma State added nine runs in the fifth and Williams hit a three-run home run for Western Michigan in the bottom of the inning.

WMU used five pitchers in the contest. Jordan Kurth started the game and took the loss.

Moving ahead, Western Michigan travels to the Chattanooga Frost Classic in Tennessee, Feb. 23-25. The Broncos will face five opponents over three days.
