KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan hockey team will be participating in the 2018 Concussion Awareness Weekend program through the Headway Foundation as it travels to Miami on Friday and Saturday.
The Broncos, along with all teams in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference, will be wearing Headway Foundation decals on their helmets. The goal of the 2018 Concussion Awareness weekend is to promote a safer sports culture surrounding concussions through Headway's "New Tough" campaign, spread awareness, and provide educational resources for student-athletes.
"The Headway Foundation has taken great initiative," said WMU senior captain Scott Moldenhauer. "There's life after hockey. Athletes need to realize that continuing to play hockey while having concussion symptoms is extremely dangerous. Our brains are the most useful tool and we have to protect them."
Fans can get involved by pledging to donate an amount for each goal scored by their favorite teams this weekend. More info is available here.
The Broncos take on the RedHawks on Friday night at 7:35 p.m. and again on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Both games can be seen live on NCHC.tv.
