Track & Field Dominates in Win Over Oakland

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan track and field team opened up the 2018 indoor season with a dominant 90-44 win over Oakland University at its annual Ice Breaker meet at University arena on Saturday.

The Broncos won 11 of the 13 events on the day, earning victories in the 400m dash, 800m run, mile run, 3,000m run, 4x400m relay, high jump, long jump, triple jump, shot put and weight thrown.

Western Michigan opened the meet by sweeping the field events. Senior Savannah Dugan got things started with a win in the weight throw after throwing a distance of 15.95 meters. Dugan also took second in the shot put behind teammate and freshman Abena Atuobi. Atuobi claimed the top spot in event after throwing a distance of 13.55 meters in her first collegiate meet. Sophomore Gabrielle Collins won both the long jump and the triple jump. In the long jump she reached a distance of 5.85 meters and 10.64 meters in the triple jump. Collins also went on to win the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.93 seconds. Junior Allison Hufnagel finished off the sweep by reaching 5 feet, 5 inches in the high jump.

Sarah Anderson started off the running events by claiming her first of two wins on the day.  She took first overall in the mile run with a time of 5:14.20. Teammate and freshman Juliane Sormain took third overall with a time of 5:17.83. The pair also finished well later on in the 800m run. Anderson once again took the top spot and finished with a time of 2:21.42, while Sormain finished in second place with a time of 2:24.68.

Oakland claimed both the 60m and 200m dashes. Freshman Diamond Mitchell took second in the 60m dash after running a time of 7.73 seconds. Sophomore Madison Meredith took second in the 200m dash with a time of 26.23 seconds. Senior Davonne Bolden claimed the top spot in the 400m dash, beating out teammate Erin Dowd with a time of 57.92 seconds. Dowd finished just behind her with a time of 58.09.

Senior Claire Gilbert crushed the competition in the 3,000m run. In her final home indoor meet she finished with a time of 10:17.51, ahead of Oakland's Alana Koepf's second-place time of 10:25.33.

Western Michigan finished off the Golden Grizzlies and the meet in the 4x400m relay with a time of 4:03.99.

The Broncos head on the road next weekend, splitting up to go to the Gladstein Invitational at Indiana University and the Wolverine Invite at the University of Michigan.
