KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan gymnastics team defeated Bowling Green, who entered with a 3-0 Mid-American Conference record, Sunday afternoon inside University Arena for its annual Alumni Meet. The Broncos took the meet 195.675-195.500, improving to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in conference. The team score is also the fifth highest in program history.

"We did really well in all four events today and we had some great performances," commented WMU head coach
Penny Jernigan. "I am super proud of our girls hitting 24-for-24 today and that is the kind of consistency we want to see for the rest of the season. It was also wonderful to look up in the stands and see former gymnasts for our alumni meet. We could really sense their support and it was great having them here today."
As a team the Broncos took all but one event on the day, including bars, beam and floor. Junior
Rachael Underwood led WMU in two events and tied for first in another, while freshman
Stacie Harrison led on bars and freshman teammate
Morgan Spence notched a career-high 39.075 in the all-around in just her third meet.
Harrison led all gymnasts on the uneven bars with a 9.825 while sophomore
Taylor Buis and
Kelsey Hood each scored 9.800 to lead the Broncos. As a team WMU notched a 48.950, tying for the 10
th highest score in program history.
On the beam, Spence and Underwood tied for first with a 9.825 each to help the Broncos score 48.800. Two WMU gymnasts recorded career-highs on the event, including Spence and freshman
Sarah Shirley (9.650), who took ninth.
Helping the Broncos tie their seventh highest floor score in program history with a 49.175 was Underwood. The junior took the event with a 9.875 score while Harrison finished third with a score of 9.850.
Jessica Juncaj and Spence followed behind with 9.825's, good for a fifth place tie.
The Brown and Gold return to action this Friday, Feb. 2, hitting the road to Cape Girardeau, Mo. and will face Southeast Missouri State at 7:30 p.m. (EST).
