Men's Tennis Hosts Home Matches Against Butler and Illinois State

KALAMAZOO, Mich.- The Western Michigan men's tennis team (4-1) returns home to host Butler (9:00 a.m.) and Illinois State (2:30 p.m.) at West Hills Athletic Club this Sunday, January 28. Admission to all home tennis matches is free.

The Broncos went 2-1 last weekend with wins at Iowa (5-2) and Tennessee Tech (4-0). WMU dropped its first match of the season to Drake (4-3) in a match that was decided on the last point.
 
Three players boast a perfect singles record this spring, including sophomore Jannik Opitz who holds a 4-0 record and was recently tabbed as the Mid-American Conference Singles Player of the Week with his impressive performance last weekend. Junior Matej Svjetlicic leads all players with five wins and no losses with three of his victories coming at the No. 6 spot. Junior Eric Olivez is the final Bronco with a perfect 4-0 record in dual play.
 
In doubles play with a 4-1 mark, the Bronco team of Olivarez and junior Nick Schnobel lead the way for the Brown and Gold. As a team this spring, Western Michigan is 20-7 in singles play and hold a 10-5 record in doubles.
 
Butler opened the spring schedule at Louisville last Thursday, falling 4-0 to the host Cardinals. Ari Gerstein, Mason Dragos and Michael Dickson all earned 10 wins during the fall season for the Bulldogs while the team of Lope Adelakun and Adrian Mag led Butler in doubles with an 8-5 record last fall.
 
This weekend marks the beginning of the spring for the Redbirds after going 38-32 in singles and 16-17 in doubles play during the fall. Egehan Sertkaya is on a four-match win streak with a 6-1 record while the duo of Manuel Bernhard/Christoffer Greve led Illinois State with a fall doubles record of 4-1.
 
Western Michigan will be back in action on Friday, February 9 as they travel to East Lansing, Mich., to play Big Ten opponent Michigan State at 6 p.m.
