ORLANDO – Western Michigan senior midfielder
Brandon Bye has been turning heads at the adidas MLS Player Combine in Orlando this week, working out in front of coaches, general managers, and scouts leading up to the 2018 MLS SuperDraft. The combine is being held Jan. 11-17 ahead of the draft which begins with rounds one and two on Jan. 19 in Philadelphia, in conjunction with the annual United Soccer Coaches Convention.
On the first day of the combine, Bye was the only player to finish in the top 10 in the speed, agility and power tests at Orlando City Stadium. Bye tied for fourth in the speed test with a 3.93 second 30-meter dash, finished third in the agility test with a 4.06 second 5-10-5 shuttle run and placed eighth in the power test with a 30.5-inch vertical jump.
MLS.com contributor David Gass reported, "Big stock up day for Bye, proving that he can be flexible and play anywhere on the field. More of a forward or attacking midfielder in college, he put in a good shift at right back, defending as well as pushing forward."
Following the combine, Bye will travel to Philadelphia to accept his award as the National Scholar Player of the Year at the United Soccer Coaches Convention.
A Hermann Trophy semifinalist, Bye had the most decorated season in WMU history, leading the Broncos to a Mid-American Conference regular-season championship and NCAA Tournament win in 2017, both of which were program firsts. Western Michigan (17-4-1 overall record) finished the season ranked No. 9 in the country and was ranked in the top 25 for 11 consecutive weeks. WMU peaked at a No. 4 ranking this season.
Bye earned First Team All-America honors from the United Soccer Coaches and
College Soccer News. Before this season, Western Michigan had never fielded an All-American in men's soccer.
The MAC Player of the Year, Bye led the conference with 12 goals and 31 points, which also ranked among leaders nationally. His six game-winning goals were seventh most In Division I this season and he set a WMU record with 91 shots.
Academically, Bye maintained a 3.74 GPA with a double major in food & consumer packaging goods and marketing & supply chain management.
