ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Western Michigan track and field team wrapped up competition at the Wolverine Invite at the University of Michigan on Saturday.
WMU had a strong showing in the field events, highlighted by a second place finish by sophomore Gabrielle Collins in the long jump. Collins, who won the long jump at last weekend's Ice Breaker meet against Oakland, jumped 5.64m (18-06) and just missed out claiming the top spot over South Florida'S Katlyn Gill by 0.08m (3.25 inches). Sophomore Erica Sheahan finished in seventh after reaching a distance of 5.26m (17-03.25). Collins also had a strong showing in the 60m hurdles, taking sixth place with a time of 8.75 seconds.
Freshman Diamond Mitchell took fifth in the triple jump after jumping 10.73m (35-02.50). Fellow freshman Abena Atuobi continued the strong start to her career and took fourth place in the shot put after throwing 13.78m (45-02.50). Senior Savannah Dugan finished just behind her after throwing 13.64m (44-09) to take seventh.
The top finisher in the running events was sophomore Erin Dowd and her second place finish in the 400m dash. Dowd ran a time of 57.09 seconds to win her heat and finish just ahead of Notre Dame's Payton Miller, who took second in the first heat with a time of 57.22 seconds. Freshman Juliane Sormain took fifth overall in the 600m run after running a time of 1:37.21, just .05 seconds shy of fourth place.
WMU heads to Indiana University next weekend for the Gladstein Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
