KALAMAZOO, Mich.- The Western Michigan women's tennis team defeated Oakland 5-2. The win gives the Broncos their first win of the spring schedule.
"I thought we played a little tentative to start but at the big moments we played good tennis." Stated head coach
Ryan Tomlinson, "It was good to get out and compete again. We have some things to work on this week and we will work hard to get them fixed."
The doubles point went down to the wire with
Denise Azcui and
Valeria Riegraf rallying to win the final two points to secure the match victory and the doubles point for the Broncos. Also winning for the Broncos was the duo of
Melina Lyubomirova and
Katja Fevralev with the score of 7-6.
In singles, the Broncos got off to a dominant start with
Katja Fevralev,
Barbare Eristavi and
Melina Lyubomirova all winning in straight sets. These wins secured victory for WMU giving them four points needed to win the match. Oakland was able to take two matches away from the Broncos. The day finished with
Gabriela Slavova winning in three sets to give the Broncos an additional point.
Fevralev earned her first victory of the season. Eristavi improved her record to 3-4 and Lyubomirova now is 4-5 on the season.
The Broncos are on the road for their next matches against Indiana and Butler on Saturday, January 20.
