Men's Tennis Hosts Xavier and Detroit Mercy

KALAMAZOO, Mich.- The Western Michigan men's tennis team is primed to resume the 2017-18 season with a pair of home matches at West Hills Athletic Club on Sunday, January 14 first against Xavier at 11:00 a.m. followed by Detroit Mercy at 4:30 p.m. Admission to all home men's tennis matches is free.

 The last time WMU faced Xavier was in March of 2015 as the Broncos won the match 4-3. The last three meetings between the two have been very close with a combined score of 12-9, in favor of the Broncos. Western Michigan has dominated when facing the Titans with a seven-match win-streak and a combined score of 43-6.

Western Michigan's last action in the fall was at the MAC Invite back on Nov. 10-12. It ended with five Broncos including Lenhard Haupt, Kennosuke Nouchi, Jannik Opitz and Nick Schnobel being crowned Flight Champions.

Senior Maik Steiner enters the season ranked in the latest Oracle/ITA Division I Men's National Singles Ranking as No. 65 and leads the Broncos with a 13-4 overall record. Right behind him is sophomore Jannik Opitz with a 11-5 record while Lenhard Haupt owns a 9-6 record. In doubles play, partners Eric Olivarez and Nick Schnobel lead WMU with a 6-3 record in the fall while Opitz and Steiner are second on the team with a record of 5-3.
 
Last spring the Broncos went 16-8 overall, 6-1 in Mid-American Conference play. WMU earned the No. 2 seed in the MAC Tournament but lost in a heartbreaker to No. 1 seed Buffalo in the championship round.  

The Broncos next match will be on the road at Iowa on Friday, January 19 at 7:00 p.m.
