WMU to Implement Clear Bag Policy at Waldo Stadium

Clear Bag Policy

General | September 04, 2017

KALAMAZOO, Mich.- To enhance existing security measures and expedite venue entry at Waldo Stadium for home Western Michigan football games, a new clear bag policy will be implemented that regulates the size and type of bags that may be carried into event venues. The clear bag policy is effective Sept. 1, 2017.

"In an effort to enhance our stadium security, consistent with best practices adopted around the nation, we are implementing a clear bag policy for the 2017 football season," said WMU Senior Athletic Director Monty Porter. "While we do hope this will increase speed at the gates, for those needing to have bags checked, ultimately this is about creating a more safe environment for all in attendance. We encourage all to review our policies at wmubroncos.com/clearbagpolicy."

Consistent with best practices as recommended by Department of Homeland Security, the size and type of bags allowed for entry will be regulated.

While fans may find it necessary to bring bags into Waldo Stadium the following guidelines apply:

· Bags should be clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC and do not exceed 12" X 6" X 12" in size.
· Clear bags may have a logo on one side so long as said logo does not exceed 4" X 3.4".
· Small clutch bags with or without a handle or strap that do not exceed 4.5" X 6.5" or approximately the size of a hand.
· One-gallon clear plastic freezer bag (Ziploc bag etc.).
· Exceptions will be made for medical items or a diaper bag (with small child) needed after a proper inspection by security at the gate before entry.

Prohibited bags include, but are not limited to:
· Clutch bags larger than a hand
· Purses
· Briefcases
· Duffle bags
· Backpacks
· Cinch bags
· Mesh bags
· Fanny packs that are not clear or exceed the size limit
· Camera bags/cases
· Binocular bags/cases
· Tinted / Patterned Plastic bags
· Any bag larger than regulated size

Note:
• Prohibited items must be returned to cars or disposed of before entering the stadium
• Authorities reserve the right to inspect any item at any time
• WMU is not responsible for any items left at gate or in stadium

In addition to bags not meeting the Clear Bag Policy, there are several other prohibited items at Waldo Stadium.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS REGARDING THE CLEAR BAG POLICY
Are other events limiting bags?
Yes. This policy is becoming common throughout collegiate football stadiums, as well as implemented by the NFL. Some institutions do not permit bags of any kind to be brought inside the stadium.

How does the new policy improve public safety?
The clear bag is easily searched and significantly reduces faulty bag searches. It also supports the Department of Homeland Security's "If You See Something, Say Something" campaign.

If I don't want to use a one-gallon freezer bag, where can I purchase one of the approved Clear Bags?
Approved Clear Bags are currently on sale at the WMU Bookstore, as well as wmubroncosgear.com. Other sites to browse are Amazon and www.stadiumbags.com.

Do I have to put everything I'm carrying into the permissible bags?
No. Fans are limited only to the type of bags carried into the stadium, not items that they may normally bring to a game that fit in pockets or clutch bags (e.g., keys, makeup, feminine products, comb, phone, wallet, credit cards). Fans may carry a blanket over their arms, and binoculars and/or camera around their necks or in their hands without the case. Fans may also use the clear bag and clutch to carry these items and other permissible items. Every member of the family may carry in a permissible bag.

What about diaper bags?
Exceptions will be made for medical items or a diaper bag (with small child) needed after a proper inspection by security at the gate before entry.

How many bags may each person bring into the stadium?
One large clear bag - either a one-gallon Ziploc style bag or the 12" x 6" x 12" clear bag - plus a small clutch that does not exceed 4.5" x 6.5". The small clutch allows privacy for small personal items and also is easily searched.

May fans carry cameras, binoculars, smart phones or tablets separately from what they put in a clear bag?
Yes. A phone, binoculars or cameras may be carried into the stadium as long as it is not in its own bag.

Are seat cushions allowed to be carried into the stadium?
Seat Cushions are among the items listed in the Complete List of Waldo Stadium policies (see above) ... seat cushions are allowed with the exception of those containing any type of metal or pockets, zippers, storage slots, seat backs, arm rests, or attachments of any kind.

What about bringing blankets in cold weather?
Fans will be able to bring blankets by tossing them over a shoulder or arm.

Are all purses prohibited?
No. Small clutch purses, with or without a handle or strap, that do not exceed 4.5" x 6.5" are permitted along with either the 12" x 6" x 12" clear tote bag or the one-gallon freezer bag. Fans are encouraged not to bring any bags, but the policy has been created to balance fan needs with improved public safety and convenience.

Does this bag policy apply to credentialed individuals (e.g., media, staff)?
There will be an exception specifically for "credentialed" individuals who bring bags that do not meet the policy guidelines. However, bags are still subject to search upon entry.
