Golf Takes Sixth at Mary Fossum Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Western Michigan golf team wrapped up the 34th annual Mary Fossum Invitational at Forest Akers West Golf Course on Sunday, taking sixth place.

WMU's golfers combined to shoot a three-round total of 933 (+69) and just three strokes out of a top-five finish. The hosts Michigan State Spartans took first place, while Toledo finished in second. Charlotte took third, followed by Xavier and Northern Illinois.

Freshman Megan Watkins led the Broncos with a 17th place finish. Watkins finished off the tournament with a weekend-low of 75 to finish at 220 (+13). Julia Champion dropped a spot from yesterday and finished tied for 22nd after shooting a 78 for a three-round total of 233 (+17). Junior Claire Hernandez was WMU's third finisher on the day, tying for 25th after shooting a 235 (+19). Jasmine Chee and Cameryn Lucia rounded out the top five for the Broncos.

Western Michigan is next in action on Oct. 1-2 hosting the annual Kzoo Classic at The Moors Golf Club in Portage, Mich.
