EAST LANSING, Mich. – After two rounds, the Western Michigan golf team sits tied for sixth place at the 34th annual Mary Fossum Invitational at Forest Akers West Golf Course on Saturday.
The Broncos shot a 36-hole total of 622 (+34) and are currently tied with Bowling Green. WMU sits just one stroke out of fifth place. The host Michigan State Spartans lead the tournament with a total of 563 (-13).
"We didn't play the way I know we can today," said head coach Elise Swartout-Mosher. "However, I am pleased with the learning we did have and the enthusiasm to keep working hard. We are looking forward to bouncing back tomorrow and finishing the tournament strong."
Freshman Megan Watkins was the team's top finisher on the day with a total of 154 (+10). Watkins shot an opening-round 76 and followed it up with a 78. Just behind her sits senior Julia Champion with a 155 (+11). Champion opened her day with an 81 but responded well in the second round to shoot a 74. Junior Claire Hernandez also had a good second round, shooting a 76 to move her two-round total down to 156 (+12).
The Broncos are back in action on Sunday.
