KALAMAZOO, Mich.- The Western Michigan men's soccer team has been named the Division I National Team of the Week by NCAA Soccer. The Broncos are currently ranked No. 1 in the Great Lakes Region and No. 12 nationally in the United Soccer Coaches Poll.
With an 8-0-1 record, Western Michigan is undefeated through its first nine games. The Broncos have defeated two top-25 teams, taking down No. 21 Butler (2-1) on Sept. 8 and most recently No. 22 Michigan this past Wednesday (1-0).
WMU's two top 25 wins, No. 1 regional and top-15 national ranking are all program firsts.
Western Michigan is out-scoring its opponents 19-6 this season and nine different Broncos have found the back of the net. Senior forward/midfielder
Brandon Bye leads the nation in shots per game at 5.88, is tied for the fifth-most goals with six and ranks fourth with 16 points. Senior forward
Jay McIntosh is fourth nationally with six assists. As a team, WMU ranks second with 26 assists and fourth with 19 goals.
Redshirt senior
Drew Shepherd has played every minute in goal for Western Michigan, giving up just six goals for a goals against average of 0.65. He has made 13 saves and has five shutouts, which ranks fourth most in the nation.
The Broncos are on the road for the next two weekends, traveling to UMBC on Saturday, Sept. 23 for a 7 p.m. matchup. WMU heads to the Pacific Northwest next Friday, taking on Portland on Sept. 29 at 10 p.m. ET.
