YORKTOWN, Ind. – Western Michigan junior Claire Hernandez finished seventh overall as the WMU golf team also took seventh place at the Ball State Cardinal Classic at The Players Club golf course on Tuesday.
Hernandez shot a combined three-round total of 219 (+3) after finishing up with a 75. The Broncos combined to shoot a 309 on the final day for a score of 903 (+39). The University of Indianapolis took first place, followed by Bradley, Akron, Toledo, Southern Illinois and Northern Illinois. WMU finished ahead of Mid-American Conference rivals BSU, Central Michigan and Bowling Green in the 19-team field.
"We didn't have our best today, so it's tough to finish that way," said head coach Elise Swartout-Mosher. "But I am excited for this team. I saw a lot of good things we can build on moving forward. Claire did a great job and a top 10 finish in this field is an awesome accomplishment."
Hernandez was steady throughout the three rounds. She finished tied for sixth in par four scoring at even par and had 35 pars and nine birdies. Senior Julia Champion and Jasmine Chee were WMU's second-highest finishers, both shooting a 227 (+11) to tie for 39th. Freshman Cameryn Lucia finished with a 230 (+14), while classmate Megan Watkins finished with a 236 (+20) to wrap up their first collegiate meets.
Western Michigan heads to the Mary Fossum Invitational, hosted by Michigan State, on Saturday and Sunday.
