No. 12 Ranked Men's Soccer Hosts No. 22 Michigan, Travels to UMBC

KALAMAZOO, Mich.- The No. 12 Western Michigan men's soccer team (7-0-1) hosts No. 22 Michigan Wolverines Wednesday, Sept. 20 at the WMU Soccer Complex starting at 5 p.m. This will be the first time in program history that WMU is ranked and is playing another ranked opponent at home. Saturday the Broncos travel to University of Maryland Baltimore County for a game starting at 7 p.m.
 
WMU WEEK RECAP
The Broncos had two close games this past week. WMU first traveled to play Oakland after being ranked nationally for the first time since 2015. Senior midfielder Brandon Bye scored to give the Broncos a 1-0. Oakland tied it up two minutes later. Bye came back and answered with the game-winner in the 63rd minute of the game to help the Broncos remain undefeated.
WMU hosted Dayton on Sunday to close out alumni weekend. A defensive battle throughout, the Broncos finally broke through with a goal from senior Jay McIntosh in the 22nd minute of the game.
 
BRONCOS IN FORM
WMU is firing on all cylinders as a team right now. The Broncos are dominating statistically in almost every offensive category. WMU has score 18 goals this season and are averaging 2.25 goals per game. The Broncos are outshooting (146-50), taking more corner kicks (46-15) and assisting on more goals (21) than their opponents this year. The Broncos are leading the Mid-American Conference in shots, points, goals, goals per game, assists and corner kicks.
 
SCOUTING MICHIGAN
The Wolverines are currently ranked No. 25 in the country. Michigan is currently 4-1-2 on the season.  Leading the way for the Wolverines is Jack Hallahan and Daniel Mukuna. Hallahan leads Michigan in points with six off two goals and two assists. Mukuna is tied for the lead in goals with two. In goal for Michigan is Andrew Verdi who has two shutouts on the year. Verdi has a 0.66 goals allowed average and a 0.800 save percentage. Michigan is outshooting (92-65) and taking more corner kicks (47-23) than its opponents this year.
 
SCOUTING UMBC
The Retrievers have a 4-1-1 record to start the season. One of those wins came against MAC opponent West Virginia. Before facing the Broncos on Saturday, UMBC hosts Navy on Wednesday. Kyle Saunderson leads the Retrievers in points with 6 off three goals. Claran O'Loughlin is in goal for UMBC and has recorded two shutouts on the year. O'Loughlin has 1.24 goals allowed average and a .741 save percentage. UMBC is averaging 17.7 shots per game with .443 of those landing on goal.     
 
NEXT FOR THE BRONCOS
 WMU heads across the country to play Portland on Friday, Sept. 29 at 10 p.m. The Broncos host Michigan State for another big in-state opponent on Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 4:30 p.m.
