DES MOINES- The Western Michigan men's soccer team defeated Drake 2-1 to wrap up its weekend road trip with another victory. The Broncos remain undefeated on the year at 5-0-1.
"Pretty gutsy performance from the men today." head coach
Chad Wiseman said. "Three games in six days, add in 14 hours of traveling, and to win all three matches says a lot about this team."
The Broncos were able to find the back of the net early in this match. Off a WMU corner, the ball bounced around and came 40 yards out where redshirt junior
Tommy Clark played a ball to the far post to junior defender
Ben Thornton for the opening goal. Thornton's second goal of the season and Clark's second assist of the season. The Broncos took five corner kicks compared to Drake's two.
WMU was able to push its lead to 2-0 in the 61
st minute. Redshirt freshman defender
Mitchell Herried threw the ball in from the side to Thornton who was able to flick it far post to senior midfielder
Brandon Bye for the goal. Bye now has four goals on his resume this season alongside four assists. Â
Drake received a penalty kick in the 77
th minute. Mason Leonard converted the penalty kick to break up the shut out. The Broncos were able to possess the ball during the remaining time and take the victory.
"Today we weren't at our best, we had some tired legs and we were a little mentally drained from Friday. But the men found a way to get the result today and in college soccer sometimes that is what you have to do." Wiseman stated. "It was Drake's home opener, it was a fun environment…we knew we would have to match their energy level and I thought we did that."
Western Michigan travels to in-state opponent Oakland on Wednesday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. for its next match. The Broncos return to the WMU Soccer Complex on Sunday, Sept. 17 at 1 p.m. to host Dayton as a part of Alumni Weekend.
