"We couldn't be more excited to be in the Gulf Coast Showcase this year," commented WMU head coach
Shane Clipfell. "We talked with our team about increasing our non-conference schedule in terms of our opponents and this tournament certainly is a big part of that. It is a first-class tournament and the participants will speak for themselves as it is loaded with outstanding teams. We have a great alumni base in Southwest Florida and we look forward to our alumni coming out and taking part in this event as well."
The Broncos open the bracketed tournament on Fri., Nov. 24, at 11 a.m. in the opening game against St. John's. The Red Storm went 22-12 last season falling to Michigan in the WNIT Round of 16. WMU will await either reigning National Champions South Carolina or Rutgers on Saturday.
The other side of the bracket includes 2017 NCAA Elite Eight finisher Notre Dame as well as NCAA team South Florida and also includes East Tennessee State and Washington State, who reached the WNIT semifinals.
For the third consecutive year, the tournament will support the Golisano Children's Hospital of Southwest Florida. The hospital is the only children's hospital between Tampa and Miami and provides vital health care for the region's sick and injured children and their families. The hospital recently completed a $242 million facility that provides 300,000 square feet of space, 128 pediatric and NICU beds with space to expand to 160 beds, a 17-bay emergency department, a freestanding pediatric pharmacy and in-hospital school classroom.
