Former Bronco Keegan Akin Named Pitcher of the Month

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Former Western Michigan pitcher Keegan Akin, who led the Broncos to the 2016 MAC Tournament Championship and NCAA Regionals, has been named the Minor League Pitcher of the Month by the Baltimore Orioles.

Akin went 3-1 in the month of June in five starts with a 0.90 ERA for the Class-A Frederick Keys. It was the lowest ERA by a starter in the Carolina League with at least four starts. He totaled 30.0 innings pitched, allowing just three earned runs on 13 hits. He struck out 31 and walked 11 while holding opponents to a .130 batting average.

Against Wilmington, he carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning, before it was snapped with two outs. He finished the inning without allowing a run, marking the first time in his minor league career he went eight innings. It was also the longest outing by a Keys' pitcher this season.

Keegan is currently fifth in the Carolina League in strikeouts and opponent batting average, while ranking 10th in ERA. He is ranked as the No. 6 prospect in the Orioles system according to Baseball America.
