Western Michigan Athletics Announces 2017 Hall of Fame Class

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan Division of Intercollegiate Athletics and the WMU Hall of Fame Committee have announced the class of 2017 – Allen Hughes (football), Robert Louis (men's track & field), Ron Miller (wrestling), Casey Rost (women's basketball), and Laura Stewart (softball).

The 2017 WMU Athletic Hall of Fame induction and banquet will be held on Friday, Sept. 29 at the Fetzer Center. The event begins with a 5:30 p.m. social, followed by the induction and dinner at 6:30 p.m. Individual tickets are available for $40. Inductees will then also be honored on Saturday during Western Michigan's Mid-American Conference home-opener against Ball State.

Allen Hughes
Football, 1978-81
Detroit, Mich.
  • Fearsome defensive lineman that was a First Team All-MAC selection in 1980 and 1981
  • Member of the All-Century Team
  • Career-best 85 tackles in 1980, including 16 tackles for loss that ranked third in program history at the time
  • Finished career with 202 tackles and 30 tackles for loss
  • Helped WMU to four-straight winning seasons during his career
  • 12th round selection of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1982 NFL Draft
  • Played professionally in the CFL and the USFL
 
Robert Louis
Men's Track & Field, 1985-88
Detroit, Mich.
  • Earned All-America honors after finishing fifth in the 200m dash at the 1988 NCAA Indoor Championships
  • Holds WMU records in the indoor 500m dash and indoor 300m dash, second all-time in program history in the indoor 200m dash
  • Member of the program record-holding 4x400m relay team
  • Won three MAC titles in the outdoor 400m dash (1986, 87, 88), one in the outdoor 200m dash (1986) and the indoor 4x400m relay (1988)
 
Ron Miller
Wrestling, 1970-73
Lansing, Mich.
  • Earned All-America honors in 1973
  • Went undefeated in 1974 and won the MAC Championship in the 134-pound weight class
  • MAC Champion in the 126-pound weight class in 1971
  • Runner-up at 1972 MAC Championships
  • 41 career wins ranks fourth all-time in WMU history
Casey Rost
Women's Basketball, 2002-04, 06
St. Johns, Mich.
  • Two-time Kodak Honorable Mention All-American (2004, 2006) and is only one of two players in program history to twice earn Honorable Mention All-America honors
  • Became the first player in program history to be named MAC Player of the Year (2004)
  • Led team to 2003 MAC Tournament Championship and was named MAC Tournament MVP
  • Three-time First Team All-MAC selection (2003, 2004, 2006)
  • First WMU basketball player (male or female) to reach 2,000 points and is second all-time in scoring with 2,061 points
  • Program leader in three-point percentage at .406 and all-time leader in three pointers with 280
 
Laura Stewart
Softball, 2000-04
Plymouth, Mich.
  • Starting pitcher for 2003 MAC Tournament Championship team, earning All-Tournament honors
  • Two-time First Team All-MAC selection (2003, 2004)
  • NFCA All-American Scholar-Athlete and Academic All-MAC selection in 2004
  • Holds single-season records for wins (23), complete games (29) and innings pitched (250)
  • Registered third-most shutouts in a season with 11 and second-most strikeouts with 236 in 2004
  • Boasted earned run averages of .177 in 2003 and .179 in 2004
