The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All varsity letter winners were factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2016 and spring 2017).
The Broncos had a combined grade point average of 3.57 to once again earn the honors. The team boasted a 3.36 GPA in the fall to go along with a 3.72 spring GPA. The spring GPA was also the highest of all other WMU sports during that semester.
"We pride ourselves in being student athletes at Western Michigan," commented WMU head coach Ryan Tomlinson. "We have been an ITA All-Academic team since its inception."
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must achieve a grade point average of at least 3.50 over the course of the current academic year.
Western Michigan led the way for the Mid-American Conference boasting six student athletes. Senior Tracy Kuhle led the team with a 4.0 GPA in marketing. Junior Olivia Myers (3.79), sophomores Denise Azcui (3.92), Katja Fevralev (3.56) and Melina Lyubomirova (3.58) as well as freshman Gabriela Slavova (3.8) were also honored.
"The girls have two full time jobs in being students and athletes," Tomlinson added. "It takes a great deal of focus and determination to do what they do and I couldn't be more proud to be their coach."
