KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Western Michigan claimed two Mid-American Conference Distinguished Scholar Athletes for men's tennis, as seniors
Matt Hamilton and
Daniel Loebel won the prestigious award.

The Distinguished Scholar Athlete is a third-year award given to students who have excelled in athletics and academics. Following each season from the spring sports schedule, any student with a 3.20 GPA and participation in at least 50 percent of the contests was automatically named to the previously announced Academic All-MAC Team from each sport. Also, first-year students, junior college and graduate school transfers in their first year of residence were not eligible for the award.
Matt Hamilton / Senior / 3.99 GPA / Finance
Hamilton finished 24-9 overall in singles and 5-2 in the MAC while being named First Team All-MAC and to the All-MAC Tournament team. He ended his career tied for 10
th in all-time wins in WMU history and tied for fifth in career singles wins with 104. He went 20-7 in doubles and 5-1 in the MAC while going 15-3 in dual matches. The Wyoming, Mich., native was a two-time MAC Doubles Team of the Week winner, MAC Singles Player of the Week winner on Feb. 15 and the MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week on Mar. 29. This is the senior's third consecutive year being honored with this prestigious award.
Daniel Loebel / Senior / 4.00 GPA / Finance
Lobel was named All-MAC Second Team and was a two-time MAC Doubles Team of the Week winner. He and partner
Kennosuke Nouchi reached as high as No. 75 in the ITA Doubles Rankings. The Hamburg, Germany, native finished 13-11 in singles and 4-2 in the MAC and went 16-10 overall in doubles and 2-2 in the MAC.
Hamilton and Loebel were two of 15 MAC Distinguished Scholar Athletes from WMU in the spring sports.
