KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan track and field team placed several athletes in Saturday's finals after a successful day of qualifying on day two of the 2017 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships at WMU's Kanley Track & Field Complex.
Sophomore Allison Hufnagel was the lone scorer on the day for the Broncos. She took seventh in the heptathlon after a strong finish in the final event, the 800-meter relay. She had been in eight place heading into the 800 but finished in second place in the event after running a time of 2:23.78 and jumped to seventh to score two points. Hufnagel finished the seven events with a personal-best 4,796 points.
Freshman Madison Meredith qualified in the 100-meter dash finals after running a time of 11.80 seconds. It was the third-fastest qualifying time on the day. Fellow freshman Gabrielle Collins qualified in the 100-meter hurdles. She claimed the final qualifying spot after running a time of 13.93 seconds. Both were personal bests for the pair of freshmen. Collins also had a PR in the long jump, finishing just one spot shy of scoring at 19' 4.75 inches in ninth place.
WMU got two qualifiers for Saturday's finals of the 400-meter hurdles. Senior Allison Hufnagel won her heat and qualified with the fourth fastest time on the day at 59.89 seconds. After a protest was filed Anderson was admitted to the finals, along with two other athletes that were caught up in the crash.
