BUFFALO, N.Y.- The Western Michigan softball team was edged in nine innings in game three of this weekend's Mid-American Conference series against Buffalo, 4-3. The Broncos took the previous two games of the series Saturday, 2-0 and 2-1.
WMU held a 2-0 lead headed into the bottom of the seventh of Sunday's game, but a two-run home run by the Bulls' Catrell Robertson sent the game into extra innings. Both WMU and UB went down in order in the eighth before the Broncos were able to pull ahead again in the ninth. The Broncos'
Abby Stoner hit a one-out double and with two away,
Brooke Wyman drove in the go-ahead run with a double to left field.
The Broncos couldn't make the 3-2 lead stand however in the bottom of the ninth. UB got a leadoff single from Jessica Goldyn and with one out, Robertson drove in the game-tying run with a double. Jenelle Martinez followed with another double, however pinch runner Taylor Scott, running for Robertson, was held up at third. The Broncos were forced to intentionally walk the next batter to load the bases. Sophomore Ally Power hit an RBI bloop single with the bases loaded to complete the Bulls comeback.
Buffalo only had one hit until the seventh inning, as WMU junior pitcher
Holly VanTilburg worked a masterful game until giving up the home run to Robertson. VanTilburg handed the ball off to reliever
Anissa Sanchez after giving up the leadoff single in the ninth. Sanchez took the loss in the circle, dropping her record to 4-5 on the season. VanTilburg had a season-high eight strikeouts over eight innings.
The Bulls committed four errors in the game and WMU's first two runs were unearned.
Ivy Schaaf scored in the third and Wyman scored after two-out single in the seventh.Â
WMU freshman
Mackenzie Swinehart finished the contest 3-for-4 at the plate with a double. Over the three-game series, she batted 6-for-12.
