Dugan and Moore Named MBB Academic All-MAC

KALAMAZOO, Mich.- The Mid-American Conference announced its 2016-17 Men's Basketball Academic All-MAC team Wednesday. A total of 17 student-athletes were named to the team, including Western Michigan sophomore center Seth Dugan and sophomore guard Bryce Moore. WMU was just one of four MAC schools to have multiple selections this year.

Both Dugan and Moore will now be eligible to be voted as Distinguished Scholar-Athletes by the league, an award which began in 2015. Distinguished Scholar-Athletes will be announced later this year.

The Broncos have long been well-represented on the MAC's list of academic honorees, with at least one WMU player reaching an Academic All-MAC list every year since 2004. Of the 90 athletes selected as Academic All-MAC since 2004, 23 of those have been Broncos, and there have been six instances where two or more Broncos were honored in the same year. No other school in the conference has more than 13 honorees in that span.

Dugan played in all 32 games in 2016-17 and started 19. He averaged 6.1 points and 5.4 rebounds over 19.7 minutes per game. He carries the highest grade-point average on the Western Michigan team, maintaining a 3.96, studying finance.

Moore was the team's top defensive player and played in 31 games, starting 17. He averaged 5.1 points and 1.7 rebounds over 24.7 minutes per game, also totaling 39 assists, 18 steals and 34 three-pointers. Moore is majoring in business and has a 3.37 GPA.

The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. All student-athletes that meet this criteria earn Academic All-MAC honors, a change from in years past when only a select few were named Academic All-MAC but all eligible student-athletes were named honorable mentions. Voting for the Distinguished Scholar-Athlete team will follow the old criteria used to select Academic All-MAC.
