PHILADELPHIA – Western Michigan sophomore Allison Hufnagel had a personal-best performance to kick off the 123rd Penn Relays, taking third in the heptathlon on Wednesday.

Hufnagel battled her competitors and poor weather over the past few days, finishing in third place with a combined 4,384 points. While Hufnagel did not turn in a personal-best individual performance in any of the events, she performed well in all seven. Battling rain on Tuesday, she took the high jump after reaching the height of 5' 3.25".

"She was really solid despite the bad weather," said head coach Kelly Lycan. She had practiced in the rain the previous week and it really prepared her for that. She was just really steady in all seven events. Allison competed very well and it will be a great experience to get her ready to compete in the heptathlon at the MAC Championship."

Also on Tuesday, Hufnagel claimed second in the 100-meter hurdles after a time of 15.88 seconds. Heading into the final event, the 800-meter run, she was just one point of second place to Albany's Mary Adeyeye. The two battled in the 800 but Hufnagel was just outpaced by .82 seconds by Adeyeye and took second in the event and third overall.
