KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's soccer team wrapped up its spring season, going 4-1 through March and April.
WMU opened up with a 4-0 win over Ferris State thanks to goals by Roselyn Kyeame, Alex Ruffer, Lydia Bajema and Kendall Juhnke. From there, the Broncos defeated Grand Valley State, 2-0, on the backs of goals by Victoria McCartney and Ruffer.
"A big thing this spring was seeing who could step into specific roles," said head coach Lauren Sinacola, who went 13-7-1 in her first season. "When you lose an influential senior class like we did, you wonder how the juniors will step up and lead in their own way. I think they learned how they will be leaders for the fall and they stepped into the right roles this spring."
Juhnke, one of those juniors, helped Western Michigan to a 1-0 over the University of Michigan with her second goal of the spring. WMU then defeated Oakland 4-1 after a double by Alyssa Burke and goals by Ruffer and Keyame. The Broncos fell to Michigan State in their Spring Season finale, 4-0.
Ruffer, a junior, led the team with three goals, while Keyame, Juhnke and Burke each had two. The Broncos were stellar on defense in their four wins, allowing just one goal in the four games.
"I was really happy with everything," Sinacola concluded. "It was probably one of the best springs I have been a part of here with the soccer program. Everyone's attitude was great. The junior class set a high standard of mentality and accountability and I was very happy how everyone stepped into that and moved forward with it."
