MUNCIE, Ind. – The Western Michigan track and field team shinnied in the hammer throw on the first day of the Ball State Challenge on Friday.
Junior thrower Brittany Casey turned in a personal-best performance for the third time this outdoor season. Casey won the event with a distance of 179' 11" and pushed herself up to third in the WMU outdoor all-time performance list. Fellow junior Savannah Dugan also had a personal best with a distance of 162' 2", taking fifth overall. Senior Samantha Howard rounded out the event, also with a new career-best distance of 154' 9" and taking eighth.
"You could see this coming all week in practice," said head coach Kelly Lycan. "Throws coach Pat Tracy has been doing great work with his group and Brittany just keeps on improving. Brittany put herself into great position for the MAC Championships with that throw."
WMU also had a good showing over in the javelin. Senior Kara Craig took third overall with a season-best distance of 118' 3". Audrey Oswalt took seventh with a distance of 103' 1" and senior Jordan Anderson, in her first time competing in the javelin, took ninth overall and broke 100 feet with a distance of 100' 4".
The Broncos have a jam-packed Saturday, finishing off the field events and all of the running events.
