CLEVELAND – Western Michigan junior sprinter Ayiana Gaines has been named the Mid-American Conference Track Athlete of the Week after her performance at the Crimson Tide Invitational over the weekend.

Gaines ran the fastest time in the MAC so far this season in the 400-meter dash and then helped the 4x400 team to the conference's fastest time of the season. In the 400 she took on some of the SEC's best, winning the race with a time of 53.67 seconds. The time was also a meet record.

In the 4x400 she combined with her teammates Jordan Anderson, Lindsey Hufnagel and Sarita Dotson to run a time of 3:39.72. Gaines ran the anchor leg and a 52.9 second split to help WMU take second place.

Gaines and the Broncos head down to Ball State Challenge on Friday and Saturday.
