VanTilburg Throws Shutout As Broncos Earn DH Split

KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Western Michigan bounced back from a 6-4 loss in game one of Saturday's doubleheader with a 2-0 win over Ohio in game two. The Bobcats took this weekend's Mid-American Conference series two games to one, also picking up a win on Friday afternoon.

WMU and Ohio were tied 3-3 through four innings in game one before the Bobcats pulled ahead for good on a three-run home run by Morgan Geno in the fifth. The Broncos had the winning run at the plate and runners on second and third in the bottom of the seventh but two WMU strikeouts ended the game.

Junior pitcher Holly VanTilburg came on in relief in game one and threw three scoreless innings, including striking out the side in the seventh, to keep WMU's hopes alive. She went on to start in the circle in game two and tossed seven more scoreless innings, earning her first complete-game shutout at Western Michigan. VanTilburg (3-1 record) scattered four hits and struck out two in the win.

Western Michigan (13-17, 1-5 MAC) and Ohio (24-7, 5-1 MAC) played four innings before the Broncos were able to break onto the scoreboard in the fifth. Senior Ivy Schaaf drew a leadoff walk and later scored on a fielder's choice in which the ball got away from the Ohio shortstop covering the bag at second base.

WMU added an insurance run in the sixth when Erin Barg beat out a throw at first for a two-out RBI single. Jenna Faultersack got the inning started with a leadoff single.

Western Michigan had six hits in game one, three of which came in the first inning as the Broncos took a 2-0 lead. Senior Kelsea Cichocki drove in a run with a groundout and redshirt junior Marlee Wilson recorded an RBI single.

Ohio tied the game in the second and took the lead on a solo home run by Mikayla Cooper in the fourth. Junior Aspen Williams answered with a solo home run for Western Michigan in the bottom half of the inning.

After Ohio took a 6-3 lead in the fifth, Wilson crushed a ball out over the fence in right field for a solo home run in the sixth. WMU put runners on with a single and a walk in the seventh, but couldn't push either across.

Wilson ended the weekend with a .556 batting average, going 5-for-9 with three RBIs and one home run.

Western Michigan returns to Fran Ebert Field on Tuesday, hosting rival Central Michigan in a doubleheader, beginning at 1 p.m.
