WELCOME TO CLEVELAND
Western Michigan earned a ticket to the Quicken Loans Arena to face top-seeded Central Michigan with the 73-66 win over Miami in the first round Monday night. The Broncos are 21-27 in the MAC Tournament and have advanced to the quarterfinals in each of the last five years, a feat the program did not accomplish for four straight years prior to
Shane Clipfell's hire. Last season, the Broncos defeated Northern Illinois in the opening round and fell to Central Michigan in the quarterfinals.Â
POSTSEASON ALL-MAC AWARDS
Three Broncos earned postseason All-MAC awards, as senior
Meredith Shipman and sophomore
Breanna Mobley were each named Third Team All-MAC and sophomore
Deja Wimby was named to the All-MAC Defensive Team.Â
IN THE RECORD BOOKS
The three players that earned All-MAC recognition have also made their way into the record books at WMU and are still climbing. Shipman's season total for 3-pointers made is 75, where she tied herself and Casey Rost (2005-06) for fourth place in WMU history for a single season, with at least one more game to go. Rost holds the all-time record with 79 made in 2003-04. Mobley is currently in fourth place with 288 rebounds in a single season; Pat Charity holds the record with 296 in 1977-78. Mobley also holds the third best field-goal percentage (.574) in a single season. Wimby is currently third in single season free-throws made (150), tied for sixth in steals (82) and 10th in single season assists.
SHIPMAN'S SHOOTING STREAK
Senior
Meredith Shipman has been hot as of late, hitting multiple 3-pointers in 15 straight games and 23 games this season. She is now fourth in career 3-pointers made at WMU (175) and is chasing Shelsea Erving (2011-14) for third place with 190. She finished fifth in MAC play with 49 made 3-pointers this season. She is coming off a season-high 30 point game last time out, the first 30-point game by any WMU individual this season.Â
THE MATCHUP
The Chippewas lead the all-time series 51-49 and have won the last five matchups, including both games this season. In the MAC Tournament, the teams are even at 3-3, with Central Michigan knocking the Broncos out in the quarterfinals last season and WMU taking down CMU in the quarterfinals in 2014-15. The Chippewas won both matchups this season, first on Feb. 11 by a score of 94-83 and downed the Broncos at University Arena 94-73 on March 1. In those games, Â
Breanna Mobley averaged 23.0 ppg and 9.5 rpg while
Meredith Shipman scored 19.0 ppg.
