Baseball Heads to East Lansing to Battle the Spartans on Tuesday

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – For the second straight week, Western Michigan baseball will travel to face a B1G foe in midweek nonconference action, this time heading to East Lansing to battle Michigan State on Tuesday, March 28 at 3:05 p.m.

The Broncos will come into this game at 11-9 overall and are fresh off a series win over Miami on the road. WMU fell in the opener to the RedHawks in extra innings and came back to win both games of a doubleheader on Saturday. Last week, the Broncos traveled to face No. 18 Michigan and fell 6-4 in Ann Arbor. The Spartans, who are currently receiving votes in both the USA Today Coaches' Poll and National College Baseball Writers Association, will come into the game at 15-5 overall and have won four straight games, including a sweep of Illinois over the weekend.

The Broncos boast the No. 24 ranked batting average (.313) in the nation, which is also second in the conference. The hot WMU bats are led by junior Tanner Allison, who is currently seventh in the nation in RBI (33) and leads the conference in slugging percentage (.738) and home runs (6). Connor Smith is batting .330 this season and is third in the nation in triples (6). Grant Miller is batting .347 is boasts a team-best .458 on-base percentage while Jesse Forestell is batting .338 and leads the team with 21 runs.

The Bronco pitching staff is coming off a weekend where they allowed just eight runs in three games, including the first shutout of the season in the finale thanks to Jimmy Townsend-Chase, Kyle Mallwitz and Gabe Berman. Berman, the career saves leader at WMU, earned saves No. 21 & 22 over the weekend. Kyle Mallwitz is 4-0 and holds a 2.05 ERA through 30.2 innings this season, all of which lead the team.

Following the game with the Spartans, the Broncos will hit the road for a three-game series at Toledo, starting on Friday, March 31 at 3 p.m.
