Cichocki Homers, Drives in Three in Bronco Loss

OXFORD, Ohio- Western Michigan softball fell to Miami, 11-3, in the series finale at Miami Saturday. The RedHawks completed a three-game sweep against the Broncos this weekend in the Mid-American Conference opening series.

WMU senior Kelsea Cichocki continued her impressive play, driving in all three Bronco runs. She hit a one-out RBI double in the first inning and then blasted a two-run home run in the third. It was her second-straight game with a home run and her sixth long ball of the season. Miami chose to intentionally walk Cichocki in her final at bat in the fifth.

Ivy Schaaf scored on both on Cichocki's hits. Schaaf singled in the first and drew a walk in the third. Junior Aspen Williams had WMU's only other hit in the game, singling in the fourth.

After taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, Western Michigan fell behind 3-1 in the bottom of the second. Cichocki's home run tied the score in the top of the third, but the RedHawks fired back with two more runs in the bottom of the inning. Miami blew the game open with five runs in the fourth and added a final run in the fifth.

Junior Holly Vantilburg started in the pitcher's circle for Western Michigan and went 1.3 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits. Jordan Kurth and Anissa Sanchez each came out of the bullpen to throw an inning and a third. Kurth (6-10) was saddled with the loss, giving up seven runs, five earned.

Miami extended its winning streak to 11 games and improved to 17-11 overall, 3-0 in the MAC. WMU slipped to 12-14 and 0-3 in the MAC.

Following the Miami series, WMU will play its first game in Michigan on March 29, when the Broncos face Michigan State in East Lansing. Western Michigan's first home games in Kalamazoo will be a three-game MAC series against Ohio, March 31 & April 1.
