KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan track and field team is back in action, kicking off the 2017 Outdoor Season at the 35th annual Victor Lopez Classic at Rice University on Friday and Saturday.
The meet, which WMU last competed at last season, will give the Broncos a tough test right out of the gate against the host Owls, Texas, Lamar, Houston and others. The Victor Lopez Classic also starts off a challenging outdoor season. WMU hosts Eastern Michigan for the Jack Shaw Classic next Friday but then heads to Auburn, Ball State, Ohio State, The Penn Relays, and Kentucky before returning to Kalamazoo to host the 2016 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships on May 11-13.
Western Michigan finished the indoor season strong, claiming a MAC title at the MAC Indoor Championship in the 4x400-meter relay. Madison Meredith was also named the meet's Top Freshman. WMU also returns senior Jordan Anderson. Anderson will add depth to am emerging middle-distance crew that features redshirt freshman Sarah Anderson, a scorer in the 800 and mile runs at the MAC Championship, and true freshman Holly Blowers. Jordan Anderson, no relation, has featured in the 800-meter run during her career with the Broncos and also helped the outdoor 4x400-meter relay team to a MAC title last season.
The throws begin in the morning at 10 a.m. ET, while the running events on Friday do not begin until 8:10 p.m. The Broncos return to action all day Saturday.
