COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Western Michigan hockey senior forward Sheldon Dries has been named National Collegiate Hockey Player of the Month for February.
Dries led the NCHC in scoring with 11 points on four goals and seven assists while helping the Broncos to a 5-1-2 record. With the help of Dries, WMU locked up third place in the conference and home ice advantage in the NCHC Quarterfinals for the first time since joining the league. He also led the conference in blocked shots with 21 and faceoff wins with 106.
The Macomb, Mich., native started off the month with an assist in a 4-2 win over Arizona State. After being held scoreless in the following night's tie he rebounded to tie a career-high with four points in a thrilling 7-6 win at Omaha. Dries had two goals and two assists, including setting up the game-tying and game-winning goals. The next night he tallied two assists in WMU's only loss of the month at Omaha. Dries then netted the game-winning goal in a 4-2 win over North Dakota and followed it up with an assist in the 3-2 win the next night to sweep UND for the first time in program history. Dries closed off the month with a goal in a 3-3 tie at Colorado College and then an assist in the 5-1 win over the Tigers.
This is the first career NCHC Player of the Month award for Dries.
Dries and the eighth-ranked Broncos host No. 3/2 Minnesota-Duluth this Friday and Saturday to wrap up the regular season.
