KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Time is winding down in the indoor season as the Western Michigan track and field team splits up this weekend and heads to the Grand Valley State Big Meet and the Iowa State Classic.
The Broncos are in the final two weeks of competition before the 2017 Indoor Mid-American Conference Championships at Eastern Michigan on Feb. 24-25. WMU will look to improve and gain MAC Championship automatic qualifying spots at Grand Valley and Iowa State.
Heading into this weekend WMU has qualifiers in two individual events. Freshman Madison Meredith is qualified in the 60-meter dash and holds the MAC's sixth-fastest time at 7.59 seconds. Junior Ayiana Gaines has qualified for the 400-meter dash. The reigning MAC Champion has the second-fastest time in the conference at 55.02. The Broncos also hold the top time in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:41.01 set last weekend at the Meyo Invitational.
Overall, Western Michigan has athletes ranked in the top 10 in the 60-meter dash, 200-meter dash, 400-meter dash, long jump and pentathlon.
WMU heads to Ball State next Friday for the final meet before the MAC Championship.
