TEMPE, Ariz.- The Western Michigan softball team opened the 2017 season with a 5-1 win over San Jose State in Tempe, Ariz., at the Kajiwawa Classic.
Sophomore pitcher Jordan Kurth hurled a complete game and allowed just four hits and one walk, holding the Spartans to an unearned run while striking out two.
Senior center fielder Ivy Schaaf gave the Broncos a 2-0 lead in the the third, hitting WMU's first home run of the year. Sophomore shortstop Jenna Faultersack hit a leadoff single to left field and with two outs, Schaaf took the first pitch she saw and drove the ball out over the field in left.
San Jose State got a run back, unearned in the bottom of the third off a throwing error. The Broncos managed their way out of the inning when third baseman Kelsea Cichocki snapped a line drive and with runners at first and second, doubled the Spartan runner up at first.
In the top of the sixth with two runners on, Cichocki delivered a long fly ball to deep center that scored Schaaf from third. With two away, Abby Stoner cracked an RBI double to right center, pushing WMU's lead to 4-1.
Sophomore second baseman Brooke Wyman drove in WMU's final run with an RBI single in the top of the seventh. Faultersack scored her second run of the game after reaching on a walk and advancing to second on a wild pitch.
The Broncos (1-0) return to action at the Kajiwawa Classic tomorrow, facing Virginia at 2:15 ET before taking on Standford at 8 p.m. ET.
