Jordy Walker Named 2017 Miss Michigan Basketball Finalist, MHSAA Scholar-Athlete

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Jordy Walker, an incoming freshman on the Western Michigan women's basketball team, recently received a couple of prestigious accolades to add to her resume. First, she was named a finalist for 2017 Michigan Miss Basketball and more recently was named a Michigan High School Athletic Association Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete.

Walker was named a finalist for Michigan Miss Basketball along with four others, all of which are heading to Power-Five Conference schools next year. Walker became the fastest player to score 1,000 points in Mona Shores history, was named All-State Honorable Mention by Associated Press in 2016 and is a three-time All-Conference player.

In order to be named an MHSAA Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete, must be carrying at least a 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale) grade-point average and have previously won a letter in a varsity sport in which the Michigan High School Athletic Association sponsors a postseason tournament. Other requirements for the applicants were to show active participation in other school and community activities and produce an essay on the importance of sportsmanship in educational athletics. Jordy is a four-year member of her student senate with two as vice president and is in her second year in National Honor Society. She also organized "Kicks for Kids" shoe drive and has served as a peer tutor and a volunteer basketball coach; also has served as part of her district's elementary school reading program and on the hospitality committee for her church.
