Softball Closes Out Kajikawa Classic With 9-1 Win

TEMPE, Ariz.- The Western Michigan softball team wrapped up its stay in Tempe, Ariz., with a 9-1 win over Seattle Sunday at the Kajikawa Classic.

Sophomore pitcher Jordan Kurth hurled her third complete game of the Kajikawa, striking out five to earn her second win of the season. She scattered seven hits and did not allow a walk.

The Broncos scored a run in the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead. WMU extended its lead to 3-0 with a run in the fifth and exploded for six runs in the top of the seventh.

The Broncos pounded out a season high 16 hits. Senior third baseman Kelsea Cichocki drove in three, hitting a sac fly in the fifth and a two-run home run in the seventh.

WMU had six hits and batted through the lineup in the seventh. Ivy Schaaf, Marlee Wilson and Erin Binkowski each had an RBI double in the inning. Skyler Sobeski had an RBI single, Mackenzie Swinehart led off the inning with a single and Brooke Wyman also doubled.

A freshman who has burst onto the scene for Western Michigan, Swinehart batted 3-for-5 in the game and leads the Broncos with a .522 batting average over six games this season.

Schaaf went 2-for-5 with two doubles, also roping a leadoff double to open the game that led to WMU's first run in the first. Cichocki had a leadoff single in the second and scored on Geordin Craun's RBI single. Craun was one of six Broncos with at least two hits, going 2-for-3.

Western Michigan (2-4) heads to Tennessee for five games at the Chattanooga Frost Classic, Feb. 24-26. The Broncos begin play against UT-Martin on Friday, Feb. 24 at 1:30 p.m. ET.
