Men's Tennis Splits a Pair of Home Matches Sunday

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team split a pair of home matches Sunday afternoon to cap off a busy weekend, as the Broncos fell to Valpo 4-3 and bounced back to defeat Wayne State 7-0.

The first match came right down to the end, as Western Michigan got out to a 3-0 lead but Valpo came cruising back. The Broncos took the first doubles point as the duo of Matt Hamilton/Jannik Opitz earned a 6-3 win over Bacalla/Kissell at No. 2. Daniel Loebel/Kennosuke Nouchi were tasked with facing the No. 8 ranked doubles team in the country in Charlie Emhardt/Jeffrey Schorsch, but they didn't back down, knocking off the Valpo dynamic duo 7-5 to clinch the doubles point.

WMU came hot out of the gates in singles, as Opitz earned a quick 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 6 and Hamilton won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 to put the Broncos up 3-0. The Crusaders stormed back, taking wins at No. 3, No. 1 and No. 4, leaving the match in the hands of Loebel and Kyle Dunn at No. 5 where the Crusaders got a 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 win to clinch the match.

In the second match, the Broncos cruised past Wayne State, taking the doubles point and all six singles matches as Hamilton, Nouchi, Matej Svjetlicic, Opitz, Nick Schnobel and Kris Knof all earned wins in order of the lineup.

WMU will start to slow it down until MAC season, playing one match in each of the next four weekends. The Broncos head to Illinois State next time out on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 2 p.m. before returning home to battle Cleveland State on Friday, March 3 at 3 p.m.
