TEMPE, Ariz.- Western Michigan softball was the victim of two come-behind rallies, falling to Virginia 9-8 in eight innings and Stanford 3-2 Friday at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz.
WMU started off hot in the opening game of the day, taking a 7-0 lead into the sixth against Virginia. The Cavaliers tied the score with seven runs in the sixth and outscored the Broncos 2-1 in the eighth to pull off the comeback.
The Broncos held a 2-0 lead headed into the bottom of the seventh against Stanford and once again came up on the wrong side of the score as the Cardinal scored three runs in their last at bat.
Freshman right fielder MacKenzie Swinehart had a big afternoon for the Broncos, going 7-for-8 over the two games with two runs scored. Sophomore middle infielder Jenna Faultersack went 4-for-8 with four RBIs. Senior Abby Stoner had a home run in each game and three hits total, driving in five runs. She launched a three-run home run in the first inning against Virginia to put WMU ahead, 3-0. In game two, she hit a solo home run in the the sixth that gave the Brown & Gold a 2-0 lead.
Sophomore pitcher Skyler Sobeski had allowed just three hits through five innings against Virginia before she handed the ball off in the circle to reliever Erin Binkowski. Binkowski ran into trouble, walking the first two batters she faced before giving up a two-run single. Sobeski was called back to take the rubber and couldn't hold off the Cavaliers who were able to get a sac fly, followed by a three-run home run and a solo home run to even the score.
Sophomore pitcher Jordan Kurth came in relief in the seventh and held Virginia hitless. In the top of the eighth, the Cavaliers used a hit, a throwing error and sac fly and to push two runs across. WMU got a run back in the bottom of the eighth but couldn't come up with another, falling 9-8. Kurth (1-1) took the loss.
Junior Anissa Sanchez (0-1) had a shutout going until the seventh against Stanford and left the bases loaded in the sixth. All three runs against her in the bottom of the seventh were unearned. WMU recorded an out against the leadoff batter but then Stanford loaded the bases on an error and a pair of singles. A sac fly gave the Cardinal their first run and with two outs Whitney Burks hit a walkoff single.
Western Michigan (1-2) returns to the Kajikawa Classic for two more games tomorrow, facing New Mexico at 1:45 ET and Cal Poly at 5:15 ET. The Broncos close out their stay in Arizona on Sunday, taking on Seattle at 11 a.m. ET.
