BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Western Michigan hockey team scored four goals in the first period and never looked back to complete the season sweep of Bowling Green, winning 5-2 on the road on Thursday night.
Wade Allison led all Broncos (11-8-1) with three points on a goal and two assists. Freshman forward Austin Rueschhoff had two goals, while Corey Schueneman and Dawson DiPietro each had two assists on the night. Sophomore forward Hugh McGing was the fifth WMU player with multiple points, tallying a goal and an assist. Ben Blacker made 19 saves on the night to earn his ninth win of the season.
Western Michigan had a dominant night on the power play, going 3-for-6 and held BGSU's power play to 2-for-9. The Broncos outshot the Falcons 24-21 in the game.
WMU wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, taking a 1-0 lead just 1:48 into the game. The Broncos had a 5-on-3 power play and McGing score seven seconds into the power play. The sophomore forward won the draw to DiPietro and DiPietro dropped it back to Schueneman. The junior defenseman found McGing open in the right circle and the Chicago, Ill., native buried the one-timer.
Lee game Western Michigan a 2-0 lead at 9:22 in the first period on his fourth goal of the season. Ethen Frank dished it off to the sophomore defenseman and he blew by the BGSU defense and fired a laser past Falcon starting goalie Ryan Bednard for his third goal against Bowling Green this season.
Minutes later at 13:01, Rueschhoff gave WMU a 3-0 lead. DiPietro skated into the offensive zone and dangled past a defenseman, pulling Bednard to the right side of the net. DiPietro dropped it to the trailer, Rueschhoff, and he punched it into an open net for his sixth goal of the season.
Just 67 seconds later Allison tallied on the power play to push the lead to 4-0. Schueneman passed the puck to Allison and he streaked into the zone to beat Bednard from the right circle. BGSU pulled Bednard and inserted Eric Dop in net after Allison's goal.
The Falcons got on the board thanks to a power play goal at 1:09 in the second period by Alec Rauhauser. Both teams clamped down defensively with WMU recording just four shots on goal in the second period to BGSU's five.
Rueschhoff opened the third period with his second goal on the night, tallying on the power play at 3:24 to push the lead to 5-1. McGing found the big forward to the left of the crease. Rueschhoff tried to redirect the puck to a Bronco in the slot but it was deflected by Dop back on to his stick. He then flipped it over BGSU's backup goalie and into the net.
Mitch McLain added a late power play goal to cut the final to 5-2.
Western Michigan is back in action on Jan. 12-13 at No. 1 St. Cloud State. The Broncos return home to host Colorado College on Jan. 19-20.
