KANSAS CITY, Mo. – United Soccer Coaches announced on Tuesday this year's Regional Staff of the Year winners for NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III men's soccer programs. Western Michigan's coaching staff was one of eight Division I staffs recognized, honored as the staff of the year for the Great Lakes Region.
Western Michigan had the program's most successful season in 2017, finishing with a 17-4-1 overall and undefeated 5-0-0 Mid-American Conference record. The Broncos won their first ever MAC regular season championship and made an NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 appearance after garnering the No. 10 seed and defeating UAlbany in the second round for WMU's first ever NCAA Tournament win.
The Broncos were ranked in the top 25 the final 10 consecutive weeks of the season, spending six in the top 10, and reaching as high as No. 4. The Broncos produced the school's first ever MAC Player of the Year in senior
Brandon Bye, who was also announced as 1 of 15 national semifinalists for the Hermann Trophy on Tuesday. Head coach
Chad Wiseman was named MAC Coach of the Year and a total of eight players, including five on the first team, were named All-MAC.
WMU also led the MAC with nine Academic all-conference selections and three players were named CoSIDA Academic All-District.
Wiseman is in his fifth season as head coach of the Broncos. Joining him on the coaching staff are assistant coaches
Josh Ross,
Shane Lyons and
Marc Frankland. Also on staff is director of operations
Doug Raak, strength & conditioning coach
Mike Carbott and athletic trainer
Danny Walen.
"There are so many great coaching staffs in the Great Lakes Region and in college soccer and to be chosen by your peers for an award like this is very humbling and a great honor," Wiseman said. "I am extremely proud of my staff and the work they put in each and every day. The relationships they create with the players plays a big part in the our success."
Each of the 24 coaching staffs receiving Regional Staff of the Year recognition will be honored at the College Coaches Awards Reception on January 18, 2018 at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown Independence Ballroom in conjunction with the 71st annual United Soccer Coaches Convention.
In addition, the Regional Staff of the Year recipients will be placed on the United Soccer Coaches ballot for National Staff of the Year consideration within their respective NCAA division. The ballot will also include the addition of coaching staffs from any schools which advance to the semifinals of their NCAA Championship.
Voting for National Staff of the Year will begin on December 5 and end on December 12. United Soccer Coaches will announce the Men's and Women's National Staff of the Year for all NCAA divisions on December 19.
